Three local education levies to support excellence for every student

Voters will consider three measures in the February 8 election to continue funding for our students, staff and schools. These funding measures help us ensure excellence for all of our students, including staff, programs, technology and safe and healthy school buildings.

Two replacement levies and one capital construction levy will be on the February 8, 2022 ballot. The Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) levy and a School Technology and Capital Projects Levy both replace levies that expire in 2022 and fund staff, programs, early learning, technology and help ensure our school buildings are safe and maintained. The Building Excellence Construction Levy funds facility construction projects to accommodate our rapid enrollment growth and continue to provide learning environments that promote excellence for students.

Why do school districts ask for local levy funding?

There is a gap between what the state funds for K-12 education and what Lake Washington School District (LWSD) students need. Every four years, LWSD asks voters to renew the Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) and Capital Projects levies to continue the primary funding source for technology used by students, teachers, school staff, and administrators, and for facility system upgrades and improvements.

The state does not provide funding for construction of new schools to accommodate student growth and provides limited funding for rebuilding aging facilities. Local districts are responsible for raising their own money. Construction levies and bonds provide these funds. 

The money LWSD collects from local, voter-approved education levies stays in LWSD. We use these funds to provide the quality of education that our students and families expect, and to ensure our students have safe, welcoming schools that support student success.

 

Key Dates

  • October 4, 2021: LWSD Board of Directors reviewed draft resolutions. 
  • October 18, 2021: LWSD Board of Directors took action on resolutions to place measures on ballot in February. 
  • January 19, 2022: Ballots mailed to homes.
  • January 31, 2022: Deadline to register or update your voter registration by mail.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022: Election Day — LWSD voters make a decision on levies; ballots due by 8 p.m. Last day to register in person.
