Video: Middle School Battle of the Books

How do you get middle school students excited about reading? Make it a competition! Students from all the middle schools around the district competed in the district’s 11th annual “Battle of the Books” event on March 24. Students worked within their school teams of four to six students each to answer a variety of questions about the 12 books they read this fall and winter. Each team competing at the district level won a school level competition before they moved on to the district event.

Each team had a different approach to the competition. For some teams, each person on the team read all 12 books, while other teams split up the books among them. Some students read each book multiple times. The event questions focused on specific details in each of the books. This year’s competition was tied after the regular competition and went into a tiebreaker. Evergreen Middle School’s “Book Keepers ” won the event, besting the second place team, the “Magical Mushrooms” from International Community School (ICS), on a final series of questions.

Middle School Battle of the Books in LWSD is funded by the Lake Washington Schools Foundation.
